Level(s)

Level(s) is an assessment and reporting tool for the sustainability performance of buildings, based on the circular economy. Level(s) provides a common language for the building transformation process in line with the European Union's sustainable initiatives.
It supports the essential assessment of buildings throughout their life cycle, is a framework that provides a common language for the sustainability performance of buildings. Building on the objectives of the EU Green Deal and the EU Circular Economy Action Plan, Level(s) supports the building sector's efforts to increase energy and material efficiency and thereby reduce overall CO2 emissions.

Objectives:

Level(s) was developed for the construction sector and is divided into three areas:

Resource utilisation and environmental performance

Health and well-being

Costs, values and risks
A project team decides at which level the different levels are applied in which phase of a building's life cycle:
Level 1 Conceptional Planning:
Qualitative assessments in the early phase and reporting on the concepts.
Level 2 Detailed Planning and Construction:
Comparison between different construction options and monitoring of the construction.
Level 3 As Built and in Use:
Monitoring activities both on site and in the finished building. Understanding actual building performance to improve future projects.

Level(s) is based on six macro-objectives that deal with the key sustainability aspects of buildings:

Greenhouse gas emissions along the building life cycle.
Resource-efficient and cycle-orientated material life cycles.
Efficient utilisation of water resources.
Healthy and comfortable rooms.
Adaptation to climate change and climate resilience.
Optimisation of life cycle costs and values.
